Yorkshire’s Leading Private Dental Practice
Cavities occur when plaque bacteria react with sugars, creating acids which erode tooth enamel.
You can help to prevent tooth decay by avoiding sugary or acid foods and drinks especially between meals, maintaining good oral hygiene and using a toothpaste containing fluoride, a tooth-strengthening mineral.
However, if decay causes a cavity to form, it is crucial your dentist cleans out the decayed tissue and fills the tooth as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your tooth.
Under a local anaesthetic, your dentist will use a drill to clean away the decayed material before filling the cavity with composite, a mix of resin and powdered glass quartz, silica, or another ceramic material.
Composite fillings are tooth-coloured, so they blend in naturally with the remaining tooth structure.
