Your dentist may recommend an inlay or onlay if you have a cavity that is too large to repair with a standard filling but not large enough to justify a full crown.

Dentists use inlays and onlays to restore the surface of a tooth. We typically use inlays and onlays made of gold, porcelain or composite.

An inlay can repair a cavity that is severe but still confined to the centre of the tooth.

If the damage is more extensive and one of the outer edges of the tooth has broken away, your dentist can use an onlay to fully restore the tooth surface.

First, we will take an impression of the tooth and pass it on to a lab technician, who will make your inlay or onlay.

Your dentist will give you a temporary filling to protect your tooth during this period.

At your next appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary filling and bond the inlay or onlay in place, permanently sealing the cavity and restoring the functionality of the tooth.
