Wickersley Dental Practice & GDPR – A Brief Update

New legislation known as GDPR, or the General Data Protection Regulation in full, comes into effect on Friday 25th May. The new law replaces the current Data Protection Act and serves to greatly enhance consumers rights when it comes to their personal data and the way companies collect, use and store and protect it. It is the biggest update in the law concerning our personal data since the Data Protection Act came into force in 1998.

The new law affects not just the way we look after confidential patient data, but also how we manage our website. Here at Wickersley Dental & Implant Practice, we are committed to pursuing excellence in every area of our work – from the exceptional level of dental care we offer through to the experience we offer our website visitors.

That’s why we feel now it is important to let you know a little more about what changes you might notice on our website, and what measures we have in place to protect our website visitors.

1. New Cookies Notice

Most website visitors are used to seeing a ‘cookie notice’, especially when visiting a website for the first time. Cookies are essentially messages that web servers pass to your web browser when you visit Internet site. They can be used to personalise your experience and record certain information such as pages viewed. Your browser stores each message in a small file. The vast majority of cookies used by reputable websites are entirely safe, anonymous and nothing to worry about, however it is widely agreed that all customers have a right to be fully informed.

Cookie notices were first made a requirement under an EU law introduced in 2011 and have been widely adopted as best practice since then. However, under GDPR there is a need to update the notification to ensure it meets the new standards. It is also necessary in some cases to refresh consent. As a result, you will soon notice that a new notification requesting your consent to cookies appears when you visit our website, even if you have accepted cookies previously. You can expect the notice to look similar to the following:

2. SSL Encryption

As well as enhancing our rights when it comes to how companies collect and use our personal data, the New GDPR legislation also makes it mandatory for companies to ensure that website visitors are protected from hacking and data leaks. One way that this can be achieved is to ensure that the website is protected by what is known as SSL encryption, which means that any data shared between you and the website or vice versa cannot be intercepted. Here at Wickersley Dental & Implant Practice, we’ve been secured by SSL for a long time, however we feel that it is important to make sure our visitors know that they are safe.

SSL encryption is recognised by your web browser and allows it to show the green padlock icon accompanied by the prefix ‘https’ in the address bar.

3. Updated Cookie Policy & Privacy Policy

In line with the requirements of GDPR, we would also like to draw your attention to our updated Privacy Policy, which can be easily found in the footer area of the page at any time. We encourage our visitors to familiarise themselves with this information should they wish to.
